Water damage from a clean water source:
Dealing with water damage can be a difficult situation. The first thing you need determine is where is the water coming from.
Is it a:
- Broken water pipe?
- Leaking refrigerator, dishwasher or washer?
- Hot water heater leaking?
- Sink or bathtub overflowing?
Here are some helpful tips to follow until your local SERVPRO team arrives.
DO:
- Shut off the source of water if possible or contact a qualified professional to assist.

- Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the building, when access to the panel is safe.
- Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and blotting the affected areas.
- Remove items and wipe excess water from wood furniture.
- Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions for even drying.
- Place a barrier between furniture legs and wet carpeting (pieces of wood, coaters, tin foil, etc).
- Remove artwork, computers, documents, and other valuables that are sensitive to moisture to a dry, safe place.
DO NOT:
- Enter affected rooms or areas if electrical outlets, switches, circuit breakers, or electrical equipment is exposed to water. Always be cautious of electrical shock hazards.
- Leave books, newspapers, magazines or other colored items on wet carpets or floors. This can cause staining.
- Leave rugs on floors or carpeting.
- Use your household vacuum cleaner to remove water. This can cause electrical shock or damage to the vacuum cleaner.
- Use TV's or other appliances while standing on wet carpets or floors, especially on wet concrete floors.
- Turn ceiling fixtures on if ceiling is wet or enter rooms where ceilings are sagging or waterlogged.
