Yes, You can contract Hantavirus from Mice and Rats, and it is a Biohazard!
1) Hantaviruses are transmitted by contact with the bodily fluids of Rodents, particularly from saliva from bites, and especially from inhalation of viral particles from urine and feces in aerosols. The rodents that transmit Hantaviruses are: The Cotton Rat, Deer Mice, Rice Rat, and the White Footed Mouse.
2) The best way to prevent a rodent infestation and contact with rodents is to remove the food sources, (Including Bird Feeders), water, and items that provide shelter for rodents. Cold weather, signals the rodents to find warm shelter. Seal up holes inside and outside of your Property, to prevent entry by rodents.
3) ***Before Cleaning, it is important that you do NOT stir up dust, by Sweeping up droppings, urine, or nesting materials. Wear the proper PPE, including Respirator, when cleaning urine and droppings. Lightly Spray/Mist Wet fog, the urine, droppings, and nesting with a Disinfectant. Dispose of the urine and droppings, to a waste container. Disinfect ALL surfaces.
