Drought Increases Chances of Wildfires

11/7/2024 (Permalink)

Due to the lack of rain we’ve been experiencing in the area recently (and consequently, drought), we have seen an increase in wildfires and residential area fires. We want everyone to be safe, so wanted to leave some tips to leave you prepared in case of emergency.

Prepare your home or business for a wildfire. If possible, use Class A roofing material. This includes tile, slate, or asphalt. You can also use Class B pressure-treated shingles or shakes. Make sure that you have smoke alarms near every bedroom or office and in each zone of your house or business. Test smoke alarms monthly and change their batteries annually. Also, consider installing fire sprinklers.  Outside your home, make sure you have enough garden hose available to reach any part of your property. Designate water sources and make sure that the fire department can access them if they need to. Water sources are areas such as swimming pools, ponds, lakes, wells and fire hydrants.

Create an emergency escape plan. Speak to town officials to learn what the evacuation route is for your area. Discuss this evacuation route with everyone in your family and your employees. Ensure family members who live nearby know the route and have means of transportation. Also, stay informed by signing up for emergency text or alert messages from your town. Finally, don’t forget to create an emergency kit.

During a Wildfire

Prepare to evacuate. Listen to emergency channels and know the status of the fire. Put emergency supplies and must-have items in the car so you can evacuate quickly. Evacuate immediately if told to do so. If you have time, there are steps you can take to help protect your property when you evacuate. These steps include:

  • Moving furniture to the center of rooms and taking down drapes and curtains to prevent combustion.
  • Closing all windows and doors to prevent drafts and reduce heat.
  • Shutting off natural gas from its source.
  • Turning on all lights in your property so that firefighters can more easily see it through smoke.

Evacuate Safely. Remain calm while evacuating. If you’re driving, roll up your windows and close the air vents. The smoke from the fire can get into your car, irritate your eyes and cause breathing problems. Also, turn your headlights on and keep your doors unlocked. If something happens to you while driving, locked doors can slow your rescue.

After a Wildfire

Return only when it is safe. Do not go back to your property until officials declare it safe to do so. Watch out for ash pits and hot spots. Even after a fire is extinguished, small fires can flare up without warning. Check your house and surrounding property for hot spots and extinguish them immediately. Also, be on the lookout for ash pits. These are holes filled with hot ashes left by burned trees. Mark ash pits to help prevent others from falling into them and injuring themselves.

Document the damage. Take photos and videos and make a written list documenting your damaged property. Contact your insurance company immediately to report the damage. Wildfires are some of the most destructive forces of nature. There isn’t much that can be done to deter a wildfire’s path. Fortunately, there are ways to help mitigate property damage and keep your employees and loved ones safe. By following the information in this article, you can help increase your chances of prevailing through a wildfire.

We here at SERVPRO of Blackwood/Gloucester Twp. want you all to be safe! If there is a fire at your home or business and you need help getting your dwelling back to as it was before, give us a call! After a fire, there are several essential things to keep in mind, including:

  • Do not turn on ceiling fans or other fixtures where the wiring could have been compromised during the fire.
  • Do not try to clean appliances or electrical components that have been exposed to water, flames, or heat.
  • Do not wash walls or other painted surfaces or shampoo carpeting or upholstery.
  • Do not consume foods and beverages kept near water, flames, or heat – they must get discarded.

Most Fire Cleanup Jobs Involve Some Level of Water Restoration

Removing all standing water and dealing with moisture control is commonplace with fire-related events. First responders used water and possibly chemicals to douse the flames during the fire. Not taking care of any water or moisture leaves your interior susceptible to further damage, including issues with crucial structural components.

  • SERVPRO carefully inspects your interior, even tight spaces, to determine where moisture may be located with any fire incident.
  • We have water restoration technicians (WRT) on our crew that will pull up any standing water, including charred debris, with the help of powerful truck-mounted extractors and pumps.

We Bring the Necessary Tools to Each Project

When called for fire and smoke restoration projects, we have a wide selection of equipment and tools that help us reach our goals. Professional equipment makes all the difference in terms of results and time with any restoration. We bring powerful air scrubbers with HEPA filtration, thermal fogging equipment, hydroxyl generators, and other tools that help us achieve our goals as quickly as possible.

Whenever a significant fire takes place, there could be a lot of reconstruction involved to bring your building back to pre-fire condition. We have a local selection of skilled contractors that we trust to handle every aspect of the rebuild, including drywall replacement, new flooring, structural work, electrical, and more.

Contents Cleaning and Restoration You Can Count On

We know that your home is filled with personal belongings, furnishings you love, and cherished mementos. Because of this, we always take the time to carefully inspect and pre-test items before cleaning to ensure the best process gets selected. Our crew's fire and smoke restoration technicians (FSRT) know how to handle soiling, whether protein-based smoke, wet smoke, dry smoke, and other harsh residues.

Rather than leaving your fire damage to chance with DIY methods alone, have the pros handle your project instead! Call us at SERVPRO of Blackwood/Gloucester Twp at (856)227-7800, and we can send out a crew as soon as possible.

Soot & Smoke

8/24/2022 (Permalink)

Grarage Fire Photo of a garage after a parked car fire

Smoke and soot are very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allow us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and Soot Facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two distinct types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Blackwood/Gloucester Twp. will evaluate the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, hot temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

How to Help Prevent a House Fire

6/16/2022 (Permalink)

Burnt room from a house fire Charred walls from a house fire

A fire can happen anywhere and it’s important to always be prepared for what you would do if you had one in your home. Likewise, it’s just as important to look at all of the ways that you can help prevent one from happening in the first place. At SERVPRO of Blackwood/Gloucester Twp, we want to help you avoid this type of disaster with some easy best practices to implement in your home. Hopefully, you will be able to prevent a problem before it even happens.

Unplug electronics when not in use

Excess electricity flowing through items in your home can always be a potential fire hazard. Things like computers, TVs, gaming systems, charging cables and more, use electricity even when they’re not on/in use. That means they can experience a surge at any time or they can overheat and cause a fire. By unplugging these items when you’re not using them, you can cut down on your chances of a fire.

Use surge protectors

If you do have items that you do not unplug when not in use, you want to make sure that they are all plugged into surge protectors. A surge in power is when you are most likely to experience an electrical fire and by plugging items into a surge protector you can avoid that excess electricity getting to the item and causing a fire.

Never leave flames or heat sources unattended

If you’re cooking, lighting candles, or using any other type of flame or excessive heat, you want to make sure that you’re watching it at all times. When you start cooking, you never want to leave the stove unattended. If you start a fire in your fireplace or light your grill, you want to make sure you keep an eye on that as well. These are also good places to have a fire extinguishers and smoke alarms, in case of a fire emergency. It is important to keep children away from these sources of heat for multiple safety reasons.

Keep flammable items away from heat

Flammable items like fabrics, paper, even hair should always be kept away from an open flame or excessive heat. It is important to not wear loose clothing and keep your hair up when lighting a grill, fireplace, candles, etc.

Don’t smoke in your home

If you smoke, it’s important to always do so in a well-ventilated area and to completely put out your cigarette before you throw it away. Cigarettes have the ability to burn even if you think that you’ve put them out. That small ember can ignite inside your trashcan or outside your home and cause a fire. If you smoke outside, watch out for stray ashes and dispose of cigarettes appropriately.

Always put out the fire, completely

If you have a fireplace, it’s important to always keep an eye on it. You want to make sure that you put out the fire well before you leave that area because embers can continue to smolder and burn and logs can continue to have flames inside of them. You want to make sure you completely smother the fire and wait before you leave the room, in case it re-ignites.

Cut back on the clutter

Excess clutter in your home is actually one way that fires can start spontaneously as well as spread rapidly. By keeping less clutter in your home you’ll be able to cut down on your risk and also make it more likely that you can save your home in the event of a fire.

Clean out lint and heater filters

You want to make sure that you remove the lint from your dryer filter every time that you do the laundry. Even a small amount of lint could cause a large fire. If there is a screen behind the filter, it is important to remember to clean that part as well. Use a vacuum hose to ensure all lint is removed, if possible. Your heating system needs a filter in order to run, but how often do you change that filter? You should be doing it frequently because if lint fills up in the filter, the heat from the furnace can actually ignite it.

Turn heated items off when not at home

Your dryer uses a lot of heat and even your dishwasher runs hot. Space heaters and heated blankets are made to produce heat. These are all items you don’t want to leave running/on when you’re not home because they could easily start a fire.

Keep gases and oils away from heat sources and sparks

If you store gas at your home, you want to keep it away from a potential spark or flame. The same goes for cooking and vehicle oils. By carefully containing these things in approved containers and keeping them a safe distance away from anything that could react with them, you are better prepared and can cut your risk fire.

Get your furnace checked regularly

Getting your furnace looked at frequently and scheduling regular maintenance is always going to be important and should be left to a professional. They can make sure that your furnace is and will continue to keep working the proper way. A broken furnace could be a huge danger to the safety of you and your home. Monitoring and maintenance can stop the problems before they arise.

There are plenty of other things that you can and should be doing to keep your house safer to prevent the potential for a house fire.

Unfortunately, there’s always a risk because fires can sometimes pop up even when you do everything right but, at the same time, you want to make sure you are putting your effort into prevention. If a fire does break out in your home, remember to get you and your family to safety, call for help and then call the professionals at SERVPRO of Blackwood/Gloucester Twp to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Yes, Smoke Damage can Corrode Metals, Appliances, and Electronics, in your Commercial and Residential Property!

1) Corrosion of metal surfaces is usually associated purely with acid gases. But, Smoke is corrosive, even in the absence of acid gases. Burning materials release acid, alkaline and neutral smoke, even without thermal damage.

2) The acidic nature of soot contributes to the damage of metal, glass, plastics, and fabrics. Metal will corrode if soot remains on the surface. Door knobs, plumbing fixtures, and more can suffer the effects of soot damage. Soot etches into glass windows and mirrors. Soot residue discolors plastic, vinyl, Rubber, and fabric, and damages Porous substrates.

3) Electronics, Appliances, Computers and TV's have specialized components, metals, and materials, hidden inside the exterior shell. These components are difficult to see, and determine the extent of Soot and Corrosion damage.

In addition to Fire damage, Smoke damage, and Soot damage, your Commercial Property or Home may also suffer from Water Damage , as a result of the firefighting efforts. Our SERVPRO of Blackwood NJ, provides Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service (if needed). This type of damage can be especially upsetting and destructive for your family to process. Contact us, for our Extensive Government, Commercial, and Residential References, with completed projects, and Capability Statement. Any Questions, or Require Emergency Services, Call us at 856-227-7800?Our Services include Water Mold Biohazard Termite Fire and Smoke Damage Remediation and Reconstruction Services

The Acidic Nature of Smoke Damage and Soot Damage, Require Special Cleanup procedures. After a fire, soot damage is very problematic. Soot can be a black flaky or oily or powdery substance which forms from incomplete combustion. Fine carbonized compounds cling to surfaces in your home like ceilings and walls, plus your possessions.Soot is difficult to remove from any surface, and sometimes it is not possible to restore the surface to its pre-fire condition. There are two types of sediment you can find after soot damages your home – oily and dry. A quick check you can do to discover the type of residue you have is just to run your finger over a soot-covered surface. It is oily residue if it smears. Try not to make a mess. Better yet, leave it to us to inspect and clean. Heat from the fire pushes the soot and can cover everything in its way. Smoke looks for a kind of equilibrium and travels until its energy is used and it goes to cooler temperatures. When tested, soot can always be found on the acidic side of the pH scale. Acidic materials are destructive to a majority of elements found in nature. Over time, they keep degrading materials by oxidation which leads to discoloration, etching, corrosion or pitting. Stains over metals can yellow and soften.  Our expertise and "restore" versus "replace" mentality can help you save money while preserving precious keepsakes that can't be replaced. We pretest your belongings to determine what items they can restore to pre-fire condition.  Call SERVPRO of Blackwood / Gloucester Township at 856-227-7800 anytime, day or night. SERVPRO of Blackwood NJ Gloucester Township NJ, is a Veteran Owned and Operated Small Business.

Right after a fire, soot and ash begin to settle onto every surface in your home, from floor to ceiling. Porous materials may experience permanent discoloration, but many other surfaces in your home can be cleaned and saved if you take immediate action. Within only a few hours, all of the surfaces in your home can be affected by the fire and smoke damage. Your furniture will likely need refinishing or heavy cleaning, the metals in your home begin to rust and corrode, your walls will start to discolor, and even far away from the fire, clothing in your closet and bedding will become affected. To avoid permanent staining from the acidic soot and smoke, take immediate action after a fire. Also, the longer your belongings and structure remain untreated after a fire, the longer the restoration process will be and could end up costing you more due to permanently damaged furniture and structural pieces. Call SERVPRO of Blackwood / Gloucester Township at 856-227-7800 anytime, day or night.

Cleaning Soot from Fireplace, Creosote buildup, Chimney Fire Cleaning Soot from Fireplace, Creosote buildup, Chimney Fire

Fireplaces, Chimneys, Vent Pipes, and Rooftop Exhausts, need to be Inspected reguarly for Maintenance, and Interior Flue Cleaning.

These Exhaust outlets, allow fumes, smoke, vapors, and gases, to Exit from your fireplace, furnace and Natural Gas water heater, so it’s important to maintain them properly.

Neglecting your chimney can lead to very expensive major repairs.

The three most serious problems that result from poorly maintained chimneys are:
1) Carbon monoxide poisoning
2) Chimney fires and Heater Soot/Creosote Puffbacks.
3) Premature failure of the fireplace and chimney, which leads to Water Damage intrusion, and possibly Structural issues with your property.

As the smoke rises up the chimney, it comes into contact with the relatively cooler interior of the chimney (the flue), where some of the smoke condenses, like steam on a glass of cold water. The resulting condensed smoke is called creosote. Creosote is a black or brown gummy substance that builds up on the flue. Once a sufficient amount of creosote builds up, it can catch fire.

Preventing Chimney fire, creosote, smoke damage near me, fire damage near me

11/8/2021 (Permalink)

Preventing Chimney fire, creosote, smoke damage near me, fire damage near me Preventing Chimney fire, creosote, smoke damage near me, fire damage near me

Fireplaces, Chimneys, Vent Pipes, and Rooftop Exhausts, need to be Inspected regularly for Maintenance, and Interior Flue Cleaning.

These Exhaust outlets, allow fumes, smoke, vapors, and gases, to Exit from your fireplace, furnace and Natural Gas water heater, so it’s important to maintain them properly.

Neglecting your chimney can lead to very expensive major repairs.

The 3 most serious problems, that result from poorly maintained chimneys are:

Have you Inspected Your Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Alarms, to make sure they are Operating Properly?

There are smoke alarms and alert devices that alert people who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

These devices include strobe lights that flash to alert people when the smoke alarm sounds.

Also, Pillow or Bed shakers designed to work with your smoke alarm also can be purchased and installed. These work by shaking the pillow or bed when the smoke alarm sounds. These Safety and Alarm Products can be Found and Bought Online.

Some Smoke and Fire Safety tips:

1) Install a bedside alert device that responds to the sound of the smoke and CO alarms. Use of a low frequency alarm can also wake a sleeping person with mild to severe hearing loss.
2) Sleep with your mobility device, glasses, and phone close to your bed.
3)Keep pathways like hallways lit with night lights, and free from clutter to make sure everyone can get out safely. Have a Evacuation Plan with Fire Drills and Escape Routes.

What is a Heater PuffBack? Cleaning smoke damage, Heater Puffback in NJ, Soot damage in NJ, Smoke damage in NJ What is a Heater PuffBack? Cleaning smoke damage, Heater Puffback in NJ, Soot damage in NJ, Smoke damage in NJ

What is a Heater PuffBack?

1) Definition of heating system puffback: a puffback at oil fired heating equipment is literally an explosion of un-burned oil in the combustion chamber of an oil-fired boiler, furnace, or water heater.

2) Depending on the quantity of oil that is ignited, the puffback can damage the boiler itself, may cause the flue vent connector (stackpipe) to become disconnected, and may blow soot throughout the building

3) The cause of this puffback explosion is the ignition of un-burned oil lying on or in the bottom of the heating appliance combustion chamber.

Before a catastrophic Heater puffback occurs, Make sure you have a HVAC Heater Tune Up and or an Inspection, of your Heating System.

Sometimes a Chimney or Vent, can be clogged, which is a Hazardous issue.

Fire and the resulting smoke from such a destructive force can cause damage to all areas of your home, not just the ground zero location of the fire. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), the costs of direct property damage as a result of house fires has increased since 2011. 2015 saw $7 billion worth of damage.

Fire damage in Gloucester Township is stressful and can be a scary surprise for any homeowner. SERVPRO has seen firsthand what fire and smoke damage can do to a home and this is the reason why we work quickly and restore homes with the best methods and latest technology to get you and your family back in your beds, safe and sound.

Reasons To Never Extend The Cleaning Process Post-Fire
When a fire has occurred in your home, it is crucial to call a fire cleanup and restoration expert like SERVPRO right away to respond to your emergency. Extending the response time can have many consequences to the living spaces and structure of your home.

Electricity is needed to heat and cool your Commercial and Residential property, and run light fixtures, appliances, and electronics. Also, there is a greater the risk of electrical-related fires, with too many items plugged into outlets.

Below are nine safety measures one can adhere to in order to reduce the risk of electrical fires in Commercial and Residential properties:

  1. On a regular basis, have the home inspected for loose wires, shorts, and faulty wiring that increase the risk of potential electrical fires, as electrical wiring eventually needs to be replaced. This is especially pertinent if one lives in an older home. Signs that faulty wiring is a pressing issue can include flickering lamps, buzzing outlets, or outlets that spark when an electronic device is plugged in. If one of these indications occurs, do not delay in in hiring a certified electrician to give the home an inspection to determine if the wiring is safe or if it is in need of rewiring.
  2. Install a smoke detector on every level of the home and inside each bedroom. It is vital to make sure the smoke detectors are working properly by testing them every month. Test the detectors to ensure that all members of the home know the sound of the smoke detector. Also, create a plan so that the entire family knows what to do in case of an actual fire. Once a plan is in place, practice each aspect of fire-escape strategy to guarantee its success.
  3. Utilize safety measures with electric cords. This includes replacing cords that are loose, frayed, or contains cracks. Never place cords in areas that receive a large volume of foot traffic, such as under mats or carpeting. Avoid tacking cords to surfaces with nails or staples. If an extension cord is being used on a long-term basis, consider having outlets installed by a certified electrician nearer to your electronic devices.
  4. Only use the correct wattage light bulbs in all fixtures. If the wattage is higher than the requirement noted on the lamp or appliance, replace the bulbs immediately. Firmly secure light bulbs in the socket to safeguard them from overheating.
  5. Use a surge protector to guard appliances and other electronics in your home. It is important that homeowners use a surge protector that is equivalent to the equipment one has while keeping in mind that they only protect the items that are directly plugged into them. Note that there are two basic types of surge protectors: the power strip accompanied by a surge protector and the wall-mount surge protector. When buying a surge protector, locate one that has the Underwriter’s Laboratories (UL) mark of approval and always avoid overloading it. As with wiring, surge protectors will eventually need to be replaced, especially if the home experiences a large surge or frequent power surges.
  6. Store flammables away from electrical appliances. It is helpful to establish a safe, designated area for flammable chemicals in your home.
  7. As the average daily temperature declines, portable space heaters run a high risk of electrical fires. Other risks include lamps, blow dryers, hair straighteners, and clothing irons. Any object made of fabric, such as towels and bath mats, can quickly ignite and spread fire rapidly.
  8. Place a fire extinguisher in all major rooms of the home, such as kitchen, bedrooms, and laundry room. The National Fire Protection Association suggests a multi-purpose extinguishers that carry and “A, B, C,” combination classification while also carrying the label of an independent testing laboratory. Have all family members read the instructions on how to use the fire extinguisher. Extinguisher are useful in containing small fires until the fire department arrives, but the first priority should be getting one’s family out of the home safely.
  9. Arcs cause numerous electrical fires every year, but this can be combatted by installing an Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) breaker in the home. Arcs in the home’s electrical system occur when an electrical current flows through an inadvertent path generating a sudden, high temperature in electrical wires. When this happens, the extreme temperatures can easily ignite other combustible materials surrounding it, such as wood or insulation. The National Electrical Manufacturers Association says having an AFCI breaker offers greater fire protection for homeowners than a standard circuit breaker. An AFCI monitors the circuits in your home for the presence of hazardous arcing conditions and instantly disconnects the damaged circuit before the arc has time to build enough heat to cause a fire. As of 2008, the National Electrical Code has required new homes to have AFCI protection, but the code varies from state to state, and older homes are at greater risk due to aging electrical wiring. As always, have a qualified electrician install the AFCI breaker.

Reducing the risk of electrical fires in one’s home is relatively simple, but the safety benefits are worth a great deal of peace-of-mind.

Soot from fire, Fire damage restoration service near me

Soot from fire, Fire damage restoration service near me, smoke damage restoration - image of soot webs near ceiling Soot from fire, Fire damage restoration service near me, smoke damage restoration - image of soot webs near ceiling

The Acidic Nature of Smoke and Soot Require Special Cleanup procedures.

After a fire, soot damage is very problematic. Soot can be a black flaky or oily or powdery substance which forms from incomplete combustion. Fine carbonized compounds cling to surfaces in your home like ceilings and walls, plus your possessions. Soot can be difficult to remove, and sometimes it is not possible to restore the surface to its pre-fire condition.

They use several methods of cleaning your contents, including:

  • Dry Cleaning - Used for cleaning light residues or to pre-clean prior to wet cleaning.
  • Wet Cleaning - An effective cleaning method for removing moderate to heavy residues.
  • Spray and Wipe -Effective for items that can't withstand wet cleaning.
  • Foam Cleaning - Used for upholstery fabrics that might shrink or bleed if wet cleaned.
  • Abrasive Cleaning - Involves agitation of the surface being cleaned.
  • Immersion Cleaning - Contents are dipped into a bath of the cleaning product.

Particle Ionization occurs from Heater Puffbacks, which results in Soot spots, and Soot Webs.

Typically, smoke particles are attracted to certain cold surfaces. This can cause smoke damage such as:

1) Nail heads in the ceiling: Metal nail heads cold surfaces can attract smoke particles to land in a ring around them.
2) Corners of the room or building: When plastics burn, the smoke carries a stronger charge than that of wood, cotton, or paper. This charge causes smoke residue to collect in “webs” where the walls and ceiling come together.
3) On synthetic materials: Manmade furnishings – like vinyl products – tend to have greater ionization characteristics that attract smoke particles at such high concentrations that they become permanently stained.

Though some fires are unavoidable acts of nature or unpredictable accidents, many fires in the home and workplace are avoidable. The following tips, courtesy of the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) can help reduce the likelihood of a fire in your business or home.

Watch your cooking- Stay in the kitchen if you are frying, grilling or broiling food. Never allow young children around the stove or oven, especially if they are not closely attended.

Give space heaters space- Keep space heaters at least three feet from anything that can burn.

Smoke outside- If you must smoke inside, have a sturdy, deep ashtray. Never smoke in bed.

Keep Matches and lighters out of reach- Keep matches and lighters in high cabinets, preferably under a child lock.

Inspect electrical cords- Replace cords that are cracked, damaged, have broken plugs or have loose connections.

Be careful when using candles- Keep candles at least one foot from anything that can burn. Blow them out before you leave the room or go to sleep.

Have a fire escape plan-Make a fire escape plan and practice it at least twice a year.

Install smoke alarms- Install alarms on every level of your office or home and inside bedrooms. Interconnect them so they will all sound at once.

Test smoke alarms- Test alarms once per month. Replace batteries once per year as needed.

Install sprinklers- Sprinklers can help maintain and sometimes even extinguish fires, giving your local fire department a better chance at saving your property.

Fire escape planning tips

Below you will find several tips that could potentially save your life or the life of a loved one should a fire break out in your home

• Install a smoke alarm on every level of your home

• Test smoke alarm batteries every month and change them at least ones a year.
• Consider installing a 10 year lithium battery powered smoke alarm
• Practice finding your way out of the house with your eyes closed, crawling or staying low and feeling your way out of the house.
• Remember escape first, then notify the fire department.

This picture is of a bathroom wall in a home that recently had a puff back.

A puff back is when the heating oil burner does not ignite properly and the oil fumes are able to buildup and then cause a small explosion when it ignites. Once this happens, soot and smoke can travel through the HVAC vents causing damage to multiple rooms. That was the case in this fire damage, and there was an oily soot film on the contents in every room in the house.

In this picture, you can see black circles and lines on the drywall. These darker marks are caused by particle ionization. The metal nail heads holding the drywall to the studs are still magnetized and attract the ionized smoke particles to land in a ring around them. Acting quickly and having the walls and ceiling cleaned properly often reduces the need for paintwork.

Heater Puffbacks, Oil heater, Gas Furnace, Cause, Prevention of Puffbacks on Boilers, Furnaces, Soot Damage in NJ

Oil burner puffbacks, sooting, explosions: what is an oil burner "puffback"? What causes sooty puffbacks on oil fired boilers, furnaces, water heaters? Why are puffbacks dangerous? How do you detect, diagnose, and prevent boiler or furnace puffbacks? How soot build-up causes higher heating costs on oil fired heaters. Why is soot build-up potentially dangerous on heating equipment? Do faulty boilers cause puffbacks or is it faulty maintenance? Can a faulty chimney cause an oil burner puffback?

What Causes Sooty Puffbacks at Oil-Fired Heating Boilers, Furnaces, Water Heaters?

Here we explain the oil burner or oil heating system puffbacks: what happens, and what causes them.
Watch out: if the reset button on your heating equipment has popped, you might press it ONCE to see if the equipment will run and provide heat (or hot water) while you wait for repair service. But do not keep pressing the button repeatedly, as doing so, particularly if the burner does not run for 10 minutes or more, risks a dangerous puffback explosion when un-burned fuel in the heater finally ignites - causing a puffback explosion.

Definition of heating system puffback: a puffback at oil fired heating equipment is literally an explosion of un-burned oil in the combustion chamber of an oil-fired boiler, furnace, or water heater.

Depending on the quantity of oil that is ignited, the puffback can damage the boiler itself, and may cause the flue vent connector (stackpipe) to become disconnected, and may blow soot throughout the building.

The cause of this puffback explosion is the ignition of un-burned oil lying on or in the bottom of the heating appliance combustion chamber.

The strength of a puffback explosion and the extent of its effect on the building can vary widely depending first on the quantity of oil that is ignited, and second on a longer list of variables such as heater type, design, condition, materials, building construction, spaces, doorways, ductwork, etc.

The most common causes of the presence of this un-burned heating oil fuel are various sources of improper oil burner operation that leaves incompletely-burned heating oil at the end of one or more on-off cycles of the oil burner. These include:

  • To atomize and burn heating oil, the oil burner's fuel unit compresses incoming heating oil to 100 psi or more.
  • Because any extra air in the heating oil piping is also compressed to high pressures (often more than 100 psi) during oil burner operation, any air bubbles present in the system when the oil burner stops its run cycle is exposed to a pressure drop inside the system.
  • The 100 psi air bubble expands, pushing additional un-burned heating oil out of the end of the oil burner nozzle and into the combustion chamber where it may accumulate until, in a dramatic "BANG!" the unburned oil is ignited at the beginning of a future oil burner on-cycle.
  • Oil burner shutdown problems: Incomplete heating oil combustion may also occur if the "shut-down" phase of oil burner operation is not working properly. Inside of the fuel unit of most oil burners is a spring-loaded valve whose job is to quickly and securely stop oil flowing to the oil burner nozzle the moment that the oil burner's fuel unit RPM's begin to slow - when the oil burner is turning "off" at the end of a burn cycle.
  • Even a small amount of dirt on the seat of this oil valve can cause it to leak oil into the combustion chamber instead of making a clean oil-flow shutoff.
  • Poor oil burner maintenance: if an oil burner is running poorly, for example with a dirty oil spray nozzle that has become partly blocked, the result is a poor flame and possibly incomplete combustion of the heating oil being sprayed into the fire chamber. This, too, can lead to accumulation of un-burned heating oil and a subsequent ignition and puffback.

Before a catastrophic puffback occurs, most heating equipment will give plenty of warning in the form of heating oil or combustion gas odors and soot in the building.

If you see black soot and debris on top of your boiler, furnace, or water heater, or black soot stains in the boiler room, furnace room, or living area, the cause could be a poorly-operating heating system that needs prompt attention.

4 Fire Damage Restoration Techniques in Gloucester Township

6/23/2020 (Permalink)

smoke damage caused by a fire Our customer's house had a fire caused by a faulty thermostat

Returning your home to its original state after a fire involves removing damaged property and debris, structure reconstruction, and cleaning of the building and personal property. Each task requires trained personnel with the latest in restoration equipment and cleaning agents.

SERVPRO maintains a 24-hour response team with access to a nationwide network of equipment and cleaners to handle any fire damage to your Gloucester Township, NJ home. When it comes to recovering structural and personal property, we have developed four techniques to ensure the right chemicals, procedures, and tools match the damage.

  1. Absorption – Some surfaces are too fragile to use a water-based or solvent-based cleaner. In these cases, a dry powder is used to coat the property lightly. They are very efficient in removing soils from porous surfaces like brick, carpet, drapes, marble, and upholstery. Once the contamination has absorbed into the powder, it is easily extracted by dry wiping or using a vacuum if possible.
  2. Surface Techniques – Spray and Wipe and Foam Cleaning prevent material from being saturated with water or a cleaning agent. Spray and Wipe is the preferred technique for hard surfaces and furniture. Once the agent is sprayed or misted onto the property, it is wiped off with a dry towel. We use Foam Cleaning on the property that is easily damaged by excessive moisture. It still puts enough cleaning agent onto the assets while reducing the amount of liquid. Technicians apply foam by hand using a sponge or with a pump-up sprayer which is dryer still and a better technique for more delicate or older fabrics.
  3. Saturation Techniques – Hand Wash and Rinse use cloth towels soaked in a cleaning agent to cover and lightly scrub soils and other contaminants from surfaces and fabrics. After several repeats, a dry towel is used to absorb the remaining moisture. For deeply stained cloth, we deploy an Upholstery Cleaning Machine (UCM). This device uses a cleaning agent or water to remove heavy soil along with an adjustable agitation action to work contamination from the property.
  4. Immersion Technique – Response team members, place affected property into a tank filled with one of our cleaning agents. The technician maintains constant observation of the property to ensure thorough cleaning without damage to the item. If needed, the technician has the option to use an ultrasonic cleaner to generate sound waves that force millions of vapor bubbles through the immersed item for faster operation.

In Case of a Fire

4/1/2020 (Permalink)

Household and Apartment fires can be different to handle. Residents in an apartment building may face two situations. Either the fire could be in your apartment. OR the fire could be in another apartment in the building.

  • CALL 9-1-1
  • Make sure everyone is out and safe, including pets.
  • Once you leave the fire do NOT go back in.
  • Alert others in the building.
  • Activate the fire alarm, if there is one.
  • Close doors behind you, this will slow the spread of the fire.
  • If you are in a multi-story building, do NOT use any elevators.
  • If you become trapped in a room, these steps are recommended:
  1. Keep door closed. Opening the door will decrease your chances of survival.
  2. Stay low.
  3. Wait by the window and identify your distress.
  4. Do NOT hide under beds or in closets
  5. Seal the bottom of the door with blankets or clothing to keep the smoke out
  • Exits should never be blocked.
  • Have and know a fire escape plan.

Types of smoke:

  • Wet SmokePlastics and Rubbers= Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary.
  • Dry SmokePaper and Wood= Fast burning, high temperatures,
  • Protein Fire ResidueProduced by evaporation of materials rather than from a fire. Discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

How should a fire damage be cleaned up? Call SERVPRO!

If a house sustains a fire, it is important that you get the proper clean up so the soot, ash and water do not wreak havoc on what is left. It is bad enough there was a fire, but the water and chemicals used to put the fire out can cause secondary damage.

The average person will attempt conventional cleaning methods like renting a steam cleaner and using common cleaning agents from the store. This could cause more damage, as the chemical agents could react with the residue and cause more or even permanent damage and also toxic fumes.

Our crews are IICRC certified to handle these types of clean ups.

Call SERVPRO of Blackwood/Gloucester Township @ 856-227-7800 with any questions. We are available 24 hours a day!

Candles

3/9/2020 (Permalink)

There is something calming about candles.  They look pretty and enhance the ambiance in a room, they give off a fragrant smell that can be so luring, but they can also be the cause to a house fire.   According to the National Fire Protection Association, 3 out of every 5 candle fires started when they were placed to something that can burn, such as furniture, bedding, or decorations.  Review the tips below to prevent any house fires this holiday season:

  • Blow out candles before leaving a room or going to bed
  • Keep candles one foot (30 centimeters) away from anything that can burn
  • Use a sturdy candle holder, that will not tip over easily
  • Put candle holders and a sturdy and unclutter surface
  • Light candles carefully, keep your hair and any loose clothing away from the flame
  • Do not let the candle burn all the way to the bottom; put it out before it gets too close to the container or holder
  • You should not light a candle if oxygen is used in the home
  • During a power outage, use a flashlight or battery-operated lighting instead of a candle

Although candles can add to the décor in the room, however, they can also add danger.  Remember candles are an open flame which means they can easily ignite.  Create an environment that is safe for you, use alternatives to prevent any candle fires in homes like using flameless candles.  As always, remember SERVPRO of Blackwood/Gloucester Township is here to help!

SERVPRO Can Remove Odors From Your Fire Damaged Home

Getting Odors Caused By Fire Damage Under Control In Your Blackwood/Gloucester Township Residence.

Most disasters that harm a house also create odor-causing particles to form. When your Blackwood/Gloucester Township home becomes inundated with these particles, sharp and unpleasant odors begin to get more pronounced.

Once your home in Blackwood/Gloucester Township sustains fire damage, the smell of smoke and soot can linger. These odors only slightly improve when the air becomes less moist or when the temperature decreases, but never truly disappears. Structural mitigation and restoration does very little, and sometimes nothing at all, to alleviate an odor problem that can make your family miserable.

Heavy odors like the ones that come from soot particles left behind by burning plastics and other synthetics can make food taste bad, your clothing smell, and even cause health effects in some individuals. SERVPRO's Odor Control Technician (OCT) can eliminate the odors ruining your enjoyment of your home.

As we carry out fire damage mitigation, we eliminate most of the smoke residue. Some areas remain inaccessible, and these are all over your home's interior. If your ventilation system was running during the fire (heating, cooling, bathroom or kitchen exhaust), soot could have found its way inside and into adjacent areas. Hollow areas behind cabinets, above ceilings, and inside walls hide continually disintegrating soot particles.

Our OCT uses a technique to get to these particles wherever they might hide. Instead of removing them manually, thermal fogging eliminates their ability to return to your home's air. The forced mist spreads out in the same way the smoke did, and while still hot, its components chemically bond with any loose soot particles encountered. The added weight makes it impossible for the soot to get lifted back into the air currents that travel through your home, keeping your family and guests from smelling them again.

Other areas that might hold onto odors include carpeting. While soot can remain trapped here and thermal fogging might not reach all of the residue hiding in the backing and pad underneath, we can still treat the area with potent and long-lasting liquid deodorizers. We can inject these directly into the absorbent padding. Other areas that continue to harbor odor sources often respond well to hidden gel packs, of which we have several different scents. These also last a significant amount of time.

We always discuss the needs of our customers, and adequate control of odors related to smoke and soot is no different. Our experts want to make sure you're completely satisfied with our services.

Call SERVPRO of Blackwood/Gloucester Township at 856-227-7800 to make sure that every aspect of your home's fire damage mitigation, including the elimination of odors, is handled professionally and by skilled specialists.

Outdoor Fire Safety

6/21/2019 (Permalink)

We all love sitting outside in the summer and enjoying an outdoor fire.

When you are building a fire pit:

Make sure it's downwind of your camp site or any backyard items.

Clear out a 10 foot radius of space around your pit.

Make sure there isn't any tree limbs hanging down as well.

Check local weather conditions and be sure you are in the safe zone.( Dry, windy weather for example can be a bad time to have an outdoor fire.)

When you have finished enjoying the fire make sure it's out. (Even if the embers are gray it doesn't mean it's safe.)

Pour water on the fire and then stir it with a shovel to test for any hot spots

Enjoy the lazy days of summer, roasting marshmallows and being with friends, but don’t be lazy about outdoor fire safety. Enjoy your summer!

Smoke Damage in Your Blackwood/Gloucester Twp. Home

5/6/2019 (Permalink)

What is smoke damage restoration?

Restoring a home after a fire requires a lot of work. One of the most involved parts of recovery is smoke damage restoration. Smoke damage restoration is an integral part of the process. Not only does it make the home presentable, but it removes harmful carcinogens and restores structural integrity. It is best to seek help from the Professionals at SERVPRO of Blackwood/Gloucester Township when dealing with smoke damage.

While most don't realize it, there are multiple types of smoke. Our professionals can easily identify the types of smoke present and how to remove damage from a variety of materials. SERVPRO of Blackwood/Gloucester Township is equipped for the job. They have the knowledge and tools to effectively remove smoke damage, regardless of the size and scope of the damage. We will be able to get the job done effectively. To get a better understanding about the process and how we can help, there are a few things homeowners need to know.

Assessing The Damage

Before any restoration work is completed, a fire damage assessment must be performed. This is an important part of the process. It helps determine the costs involved and the best way to approach the project. To get a proper assessment, homeowners should contact SERVPRO of Blackwood/Gloucester Township and their insurance company. They look at the extent of the damage and calculate a cost based on how much work needs to be done. The final cost should cover cleaning the smoke, repairing structural damage, and restoring the home back to what it used to be.

The Restoration Process

SERVPRO of Blackwood/Gloucester Township must begin working fast. While a fire may be put out, damage continues to occur well afterwards. One of the biggest problems faced immediately after a fire is mold and mildew growth. Due to the presence of water and heat, the home instantly becomes a breeding ground for fungi. Within 24 hours, harmful mold will begin to grow. It is important to halt this process as soon as possible. To stop this growth process, we will place dehumidifiers throughout the home. The dehumidifiers absorb water in the air, ultimately bringing the humidity level down and stopping growth.

Since a home has a number of different surfaces, they must use the appropriate cleaner to do the job effectively. These cleaners remove soot and smoke to reveal a clean surface. SERVPRO of Blackwood/Gloucester Township also uses deodorizers to remove the pungent smell that is left behind. If not cleaned properly, a home can wreak of smoke well after a fire. With deodorizers, the smell is removed. Throughout the entire process, workers will salvage as much as they can. Everything else will need to be repaired or replaced.

Smoke damage restoration isn't an easy task and should be left to the professionals at SERVPRO. We use heavy-duty equipment to get the job done, ensuring that the restoration job is thorough. With the help of SERVPRO of Blackwood/Gloucester Township, homeowners can recover and return to their normal lives. We help make it “Like it never even happened."

After a Fire

3/8/2019 (Permalink)

Kitchen Fire that affected the entire house.

If you experience a fire in your Blackwood or Gloucester Township home or office, you get everyone out and let the fire department put it out. Fire is a danger to you and your family. Unfortunately, the dangers of fires continue long after the fire is out.

There are health risks involved with fires. Plastics, for one, can lead to a variety of health risks. When synthetic materials burn, they release toxic fumes in the air and should be removed from the house. Even a small kitchen fire is likely to burn things like plastic cups, milk jugs, and so on. Every plastic item that burns means your health is that much more at risk.

If you have an older home, one that was built somewhere between the 1950s and the 1980s, there is a risk for asbestos that was used in many buildings during that time. This can put your family at risk for serious respiratory issues as well as cancer. These reasons are why you should call SERVPRO of Blackwood/Gloucester Township for fire restoration immediately.

The risk can spread all throughout your home or office through the air conditioning system. This is because the particles of smoke and soot are so small that traditional HVAC filters cannot capture them. So when your air conditioning runs, it is actually circulating these toxic substances to every room in the home or office, meaning that a small fire may soon threaten your entire home or office.

SERVPRO of Blackwood/GloucesterTownship has trained professionals to make your home or office safe after a fire. We thoroughly inspect your home and remove any dangerous substances that may be circulating. Professional restoration is necessary when you experience a fire.

SERVPRO of Blackwood/Gloucester Township is here to help make it “Like it never even happened."

Grease Fire: What To Do

2/13/2019 (Permalink)

This photo shows a grease fire simulation. Be Safe In The Kitchen.

A grease fire happens when your cooking oil becomes too hot. When heating, oils first start to boil, then they'll start smoking, and then they'll catch on fire. Most vegetable oils have a smoking point around 450°F, while animal fats like lard or goose fat will start smoking around 375°F.

If the worst happens and your oil does catch on fire, do the following:

• Turn the Heat Off - Don't try to move the pot. You might accidentally splash yourself or your kitchen with burning oil. And that would be bad.

• Cover the Pot with a Metal Lid - Fire cannot exist in the absence of oxygen. With the lid on (and the heat off), the fire should quickly consume all the oxygen and put itself out. Use a metal lid since glass will shatter.

• Pour on Baking Soda - Baking soda will extinguish grease fires, but only if they're small. It takes a lot of baking soda to do the job.

• Spray the Pot with a Class B Dry Chemical Fire Extinguisher - This is your last resort, as fire extinguishers will contaminate your kitchen. Still, it's better than the alternative if the fire is getting out of control.

• Get Out and Call 911 - If the fire does break out of control, don't try to be a hero. Get out and find a phone to call 911.

Whatever you do, DO NOT do the following:

• Do Not Use Water - Pouring water can cause the oil to splash and spread the fire. The vaporizing water can also carry grease particles in it, also spreading the fire.

• Do Not Move the Pot or Carry It Outside - Throwing the pot outside might seem logical in the frenzy of the moment. But trying to move the pot might splash burning oil on you, your home, and anything outside.

• Do Not Throw Any Other Baking Product On the Fire - Flour might look like baking soda, but it won't react the same. Only baking soda can help put out a grease fire.

Now that we're clear on all of that, hopefully you'll never be in a situation where you have to actually use this advice. Be safe, fellow cooks! Be safe, and make sure you also pass this news on to teenagers who might be cooking as well. In case you are in need of fire restoration services, we are always on call to help you.

Safety Tips For Deep Frying A Turkey

11/28/2018 (Permalink)

Enjoy Your Turkey This Thanksgiving!

When it comes to deep frying turkey, you want to take every precaution to keep your family and your home safe.

Fried turkeys are delicious, but they come with a lot of safety issues. Thousands of fires as well as many deaths and injuries happen each year due to turkey fryer fires. Before you set up your turkey fryer this Thanksgiving, remember these safety tips.

Stay Away from The House – Set up the turkey fryer more than 10 feet away from your home and keep children and pets away. Never leave it unattended.

Find Flat Ground – The oil must be even and steady at all times to ensure safety. Place the fryer on a flat, level surface and carefully gauge the amount of oil needed.

Use a Thawed and Dry Turkey – Make sure your Thanksgiving turkey is completely thawed and dry. Extra water will cause the oil to bubble furiously and spill over. If oil spills from the fryer onto the burner, it can cause a fire.

Monitor the Temp – Use caution when touching the turkey fryer. The lid and handle can become very hot and could cause burns. Also be sure to keep track of the oil’s temperature as many fryers do not have their own thermostats.

Be Prepared – Have a fire extinguisher (multipurpose, dry-powder) ready at all times in the event that the oil ignites.

SERVPRO Cleans Up and Restores Blackwood/Gloucester Twp. Properties Affected by Smoke and Fire

11/15/2018 (Permalink)

Big or Small, Fire is a serious matter.

In your Blackwood/Gloucester Township home, a fire is a serious matter. Even a fire which is small and non-devastating can have consequences which are overwhelming. Some of these might not be apparent right away to the average person, which is why you need a professional company such as SERVPRO to help you clean up after a fire.
Listed below are some possible affects from a fire:
Structural Damage
The structure of your Blackwood home can be damaged by a fire. You need to be cautious when entering your home after a fire because of this damage. It is not reasonable to determine that all the floor supports are intact on your own. Therefore, an inspector needs to check your property for damage to the structure before you go back into it. When the damage is severe, you may have to board up the property for liability and safety reasons. Our SERVPRO technicians can also help you do this.
Smoke Residue and Odor
Most smoke particles are just 0.004 microns wide, which means they can work their way into all the nooks and crannies, from carpet to furniture, wallboard, and even insulation. Cleaning up smoke residue and odor becomes increasingly difficult depending on the volume of smoke, but also on the type of smoke which are present during the fire. Some materials which are natural, such as paper and wood, leave gray or black, ashy residues which are easier to clean up. Some inorganic materials, like synthetic fabrics and plastics, leave a smeary residue which is difficult and risky to clean up. SERVPRO can get rid of all residue and odors with special equipment, detergents, and deodorizers.
Water Damage
Most fires also lead to water damage. When firefighters try to put the fire out, they douse your home with water, which soaks everything which was involved in or close to the fire. If you do not act right away to dry out your walls, carpeting, and furniture after the fire, there is a high chance that mold and mildew growth begins in addition to the fire damage. Building materials degrade rapidly after being exposed to pressurized water.

Our SERVPRO Professionals are trained to handle this type of damage. We can dry out your home while doing the other cleanup work, as well as, clean up any mold damage and check for hidden mold.

How to Inspect a Fire Extinguisher.

5/9/2018 (Permalink)

Ideally, you should inspect your portable home fire extinguisher every month.

When was the last time you took time to check the fire extinguisher that sits under your kitchen sink? Or the one hanging from a dusty hook in your garage? If you’re struggling to remember, it’s time to check it. Like any other piece of safety equipment, a home fire extinguisher should be inspected regularly to ensure it’s in proper working condition. A fire extinguisher in good working condition is your first line of defense when a home fire erupts.
Ideally, you should inspect your portable home fire extinguishers every month.

Tips for Performing a Monthly Fire Extinguisher Check

Check the label or tag.
Every fire extinguisher, whether disposable or rechargeable, has a manufacturer’s label or tag. Read the tag and follow the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance suggestions.

Check the tamper seal.
If the tamper seal has been broken or is cracked, a disposable fire extinguisher needs to be replaced. If it’s rechargeable, it needs to be serviced professionally. Check the locking or pull pin as well to make sure it’s in the correct position. If the pin missing, the fire extinguisher needs to be inspected or serviced by a professional.

Inspect for physical damage.
Physically inspect the fire extinguisher for obvious damage. This may include but is not limited to dents, corrosion, cracks and obvious leakage. If a fire extinguisher has leakage, it’s no longer under full pressure and may not work properly when you need it most. Check the fire extinguisher nozzle as well, to ensure it’s not clogged by grime, dust, bugs or leakage from the unit itself.

Check the pressure gauge.
Check that the pressure gauge needle indicates the fire extinguisher pressure is in the optimum operating range. Often the correct pressure range will be designated by green on the gauge.

Is the fire extinguisher full?
During your monthly check, lift the fire extinguisher and determine if it still feels full. If there has been a leak, it will feel light, and it won’t have the right amount of pressure to work correctly.

Shake it.
If you have a dry chemical fire extinguisher, it should be shaken once a month during your inspection. This helps prevent the chemical dousing agent from solidifying at the bottom of the unit.

Write inspection date on tag.
Keep track of every inspection date by writing it on the fire extinguisher tag.

Ensure easy access to your fire extinguisher.
Fire extinguishers should always be easy to access if there is an emergency. You don’t want to have to search for it once a fire breaks out. Don’t block fire extinguishers with furniture, boxes or any other items. Everyone who lives in the household should know where the closest fire extinguisher is located and how to use it in case of an emergency.

In the event of a fire emergency, first make sure to get people safely away, then call 911. A home fire extinguisher can be used to put out or control small fires, but it’s still safest to call professional fire fighters before you attempt to control a fire on your own.

Soot and Smoke Removal

4/4/2018 (Permalink)

What Do I Do?

For people who’ve experienced a fire in their home, the initial cleanup of soot and water can be only the beginning. On top of the devastation of possibly losing irreplaceable personal items and memorabilia, the process of getting the home back in living order can be filled with difficulties.

Restoring the home requires professionals who are experienced in dealing with fires and restoration of the property. The national association that certifies companies’ expertise in fire cleanup is the IICRC, the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification. IICRC-certified companies must meet a rigorous list of standards in business ethics and expertise.

IICRC, working with the manufacturers of carpet, upholstery and fabric, works to establish the standards on how these items can be restored, whether from fire or water damage. When it comes to cleaning, restoring and inspecting that items are safe to be replaced in the home, the IICRC writes the books, so their certification of a local company offers homeowners the reassurance that the fire restoration work will be done correctly.

Our SERVPRO professionals are IICRC-certified, and our technicians receive ongoing training in the IICRC best practices. We also understand the need for immediate response, working with your insurance agent to document the loss and items that are able to be restored versus those that are a total loss.

If you ever experience a fire and need a restoration company, SERVPRO meets these standards:

   • Proof of proper insurances and licenses
   • Formal and recent training in specialized fire restoration work
   • IICRC Certification

For restoration of your home and its contents after a fire, SERVPRO of Blackwood/Gloucester Twp. is the company to call. We take pride in keeping our customers informed about their restoration work, and in upholding the standards of our IICRC certification.

Fire Safety and Why You Should Care!

3/19/2018 (Permalink)

Being prepared will make all the difference.

Though some fires are unavoidable acts of nature or unpredictable accidents, many fires in the home and workplace are avoidable. The following tips, courtesy of the NFPA,(National Fire Protection Association) can help reduce the likelihood of a fire in your business or home.

What to do Before a Fire Restoration Company Arrives.

3/5/2018 (Permalink)

Fire in home and fire in business are especially devastating. The extensive fire damage can leave a person homeless or a workplace out of business. It may be temporary, but the impact can be overwhelming for a homeowner or a business owner. After fire trucks depart, fire cleanup is necessary. Whether it is fire in home or fire in business, the property will suffer from smoke damage as well. Aside from that, there could also be widespread flooding and water damage due to the firefighting efforts.

Before the Fire Damage Restoration

The next step after the distressing fire damage is to call a restoration company that can provide board up services and more. While waiting, the primary focus of the victims of the fire should be their safety. Here are some things to bear in mind:

It may not be safe to stay in the house or building especially after destructive commercial fire damage.

Electrical wiring as well as slip and fall hazards are typically present after the fire damage.

Wet materials, after firefighters have stopped the fire, can be very heavy. It is not wise to attempt to carry them.

After a fire and before the professionals from the restoration company arrive to give board up services, here are actions that a homeowner or a businessperson can carry out after fire damage:

Soot damage can take place in carpets and upholstery. It is advised to limit movement to prevent the particles from being embedded in the mentioned items.

Make sure that the hands are clean. This not only helps with the fire cleanup, but also avoids further soiling walls, woodwork, and upholstery.

There should be old linens or clean towels on upholstery, carpets, and rugs to reduce smoke smell and even soot damage.

If it is fire in home and electricity is not working, the freezer and the refrigerator should be emptied. Doors should remain open until fire damage restoration professionals get there.

Cleaning and protecting chrome using light coating of oil or petroleum jelly is also advised.

Houseplants should be washed on both sides of the leaves to reduce smoke smell.

It is also time to change HVAC filter whether it is fire in home or fire in business.

Air registers can be taped with double layers of cheesecloth. This can also help reduce smoke smell.

If there are things that can be done before the restoration company arrives, there are also activities that should be avoided. Here they are:

Do not attempt to wash painted surfaces, such as walls. Shampooing carpet and upholstery is also not recommended without the go signal from the professionals of the restoration company.

It is also not advised to attempt to clean electrical appliances, particularly those that may have been exposed to fire or heat or even water. It is best to consult an authorized repairman first especially if soot damage is visible.

Commercial fire damage in stores that sell canned or packaged food and beverages can be upsetting as these items should no longer be used. The same thing should be applied if it is fire in home, particularly if the items have been stored near the areas that have been affected by fire and smoke damage.

If the ceiling is wet, do not turn on ceiling fixtures before fire damage restoration since there could be something wrong with the wiring.

Garments should not be sent to an ordinary dry cleaning service. Improper cleaning may heighten smoke smell.

Fire in business or commercial fire damage, including soot damage and smoke damage, can affect the structure of the building and equipment in the area. The same thing can be said when fire took place at home where board up is often essential. It can destroy the house and the person’s belongings. Fire damage restoration companies understand that furniture, keepsakes, clothing, and other possessions are important to the victims of the fire.

It is important to find fire cleanup pros that specialize in restoring houses and structures and providing board up services for home or commercial fire damage. These pros can help renovate contents of the area that underwent fire, water, mold, and smoke damage. With the aid of professional fire cleanup, homeowners or business people can save money as their possessions are restored instead of replaced.

Space Heater Safety Tip

12/28/2017 (Permalink)

Make sure to use space heaters safely.

In the colder months of the year, homeowners look for ways to make chilly areas warm and comfortable. While space heaters can be useful to keep small areas warm, it’s very important to use them with caution. Using a space heater can be safe if you follow these simple recommendations.

First, before purchasing a space heater, check out the specifications and make sure that it's UL approved. When using the heater, make sure that you create a three-foot safety zone around the space heater. Do not place the heater on or near any carpets, throw rugs, papers, or clothing. The space heater must be placed on a flat surface and not elevated on any cabinets, shelves, or other furniture.

Place the space heater in an area where it will not be in the way and where no one will trip on it. It’s a great idea to shop for a space heater with an automatic shut-off so that the heater will shut off if it tips over. Make sure that kids and pets are kept away from the heater for their own safety; space heaters can be quite warm to the touch. Also, pets may chew on the cords, so keep an eye on them around the space heater.

It’s a good idea to inspect the heater before every use. Don’t use the heater if there is any damage.

Never leave a space heater unattended. It’s tempting to leave it on while you’re sleeping to keep your bedroom warm. It is too risky to let these appliances run overnight when no one is nearby to make sure there are no problems.

You should never use a power strip or extension cord with a space heater. This cords could overheat due to the higher electrical demands and cause fire damage. Finally, ensure that your home smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are in working order and test them monthly.

Clean Your Dryer Vents to Prevent Fire in Blackwood

12/5/2017 (Permalink)

Clothes dryer vents can build up lint over time, restricting air flow and posing a threat of fire. This type of fire is totally preventable.

One of the most common causes of fires is also perhaps the most preventable.

Dryer vents connect from your clothes dryer, and can build up lint. If not cleaned out properly, the air cannot flow properly, and a fire can result. This type of fire happens most frequently in homes, posing dangers to adults and children.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, 2,900 home clothes dryer fires are reported each year. These fires cause an estimated 5 deaths, 100 injuries, and $35 million in property loss. The U.S. Fire Administration also reports that the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires is failure to clean them (34 percent).

Apart from cleaning your dryer vent, the U.S. Fire Administration has suggestions to enhance safety when using your clothes dryer:

  • Don’t use a clothes dryer without a lint filter or with a lint filter that is loose, damaged or clogged.
  • Don’t overload the dryer.
  • Don’t use a wire screen or cloth to cover the wall damper. They can collect lint and clog the dryer vent.
  • Don’t dry anything containing foam, rubber or plastic. An example of an item not to place in a dryer is a bathroom rug with a rubber backing.
  • Don’t dry any item for which manufacturers' instructions state “dry away from heat.”
  • Don’t dry glass fiber materials (unless manufacturers' instructions allow).
  • Don’t dry items that have come into contact with anything flammable like alcohol, cooking oils or gasoline. Dry them outdoors or in a well-ventilated room, away from heat.
  • Don’t leave a clothes dryer running if you leave home or when you go to bed.

Preventing Electrical Fires with Nine Easy Tips

4/6/2017 (Permalink)

electrical fire

In today’s society, people are working overtime to meet the pressures of daily life. With technology and electronic accessories being an inescapable part of day-to-day activities, it means that electricity is in high-demand, and it is working around the clock in the home setting. Children need their cell phones charged at all times to keep in touch with their parents, and adults use their computers late into the night to complete work assignments. When work and school are done, dinner needs to be cooked with the appliances in the kitchen and the family likes to unwind with television, video games, music, and a multitude of various electronic devices. In addition, electricity is needed to heat and cool the home and run light fixtures. Undoubtedly, homes today are generating a tremendous amount of electricity, and the greater the electric load, the greater the risk of electrical-related fires. Below are nine safety measures one can adhere to in order to reduce the risk of electrical fires in one’s home:

What to Do After a Fire

  • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpets.
  • Keep hands clean so as not to further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
  • Place clean towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.
  • If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator and prop doors open.
  • Clean and protect chrome with light coating of petroleum jelly or oil.
  • Wash houseplants on both sides of leaves.
  • Change HVAC filter.
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers.

What NOT To Do After a Fire

  • Don't attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces or shampoo carpet or upholstery without contacting us.
  • Don't attempt to clean any electrical appliances that may have been close to fire, heat or water without consulting an authorized repair service.
  • Don't use any canned or packaged food or beverages that may have been stored near the fire, heat or water.
